About variable editions
The variable edition, "Edition Variee," does seem like a contradiction in printmaking. The concept is seen in printmaking but not frequently. Because each print is printed using different colored ink combinations or different colored paper, and the plates used are unchanged other than that for each printing, I feel the variable edition is the best choice to identify the prints.   Although the monoprint designation (1/1) might be considered for signage, I still believe the variable edition concept better fits the need, for monoprints traditionally have a more changing than just color.  Variable editions are seen signed in several different ways: Var.Ed., Var, VE, and E.V.  For my prints I use "1/8 Var", meaning one of eight prints in the variable edition (as an example).
